Issue 06 — three bars · one night · South Carolina
My cousins came to NYC looking for brown girls. We went to three bars. We found people from South Carolina.
Apothèke
pharmacy themed · Chinatown · $22 a cocktail · $11 a mocktail
Fig.01Apothèke, Chinatown. A pharmacy-themed cocktail bar: apothecary jars, arched shelves, candlelight, $22 for a drink. Worth it, mostly for the ambiance.
Fig.02The whole length of the bar. The bartender, the bottles, the marble, the dark. Rahul got a mocktail. $11. He seemed fine with it.
Fig.03Last round at Apothèke. The bar surface in amber. Two empty glasses. Time to move.
Neel is a pharmacist
He reinvented himself this weekend. Three bars in, somewhere after Mister Purple, he met a girl. He also decided he wants to learn the subway. Maps. The whole system. Something clicked. Sometimes it just takes one weekend out with your cousins.
Verlaine
LES · fairy lights · the garden
Fig.04Verlaine. The name spelled out in fairy lights above the garden. The kind of bar that knows exactly what it is.
"This used to be a place to get a quick fucking martini."
That's what offering $8 lychee martinis in NYC gets you. A packed bar with nowhere to sit and a guy in the corner mourning what it used to be. I would say that it was pretty quick anyway, especially for those who choose to chug.

Purple
Hotel Indigo rooftop · LES · a mission, sort of
Fig.05Mister Purple. My cousins came to NYC with a specific goal. We ended up talking to people from South Carolina instead. A good night regardless.
Three bars. One good story from South Carolina.
